Kitty Pope, publisher of AfricanDiasporaTourism.com plans to attend this year’s celebration because Otis Redding was one of those legendary musicians. “My older relatives used to love his music, so I grew up listening to the sounds of Otis Redding vibrating through the house. Celebrating Otis Redding is a way of paying homage to not only the singer, but also to family memories. As a professional in black heritage tourism, I am now also being much more inclusive of preserving our cultural arts.”

Otis Ray Redding Jr. (September 9, 1941 – December 10, 1967) was an American singer and songwriter who us regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of American popular music and a seminal artist in soul music and rhythm and blues. Otis Redding was discovered after recording the popular hit “These Arms of Mine.” Known for his sincere emotional delivery, Redding was the voice of soul music. Just as his career was taking off, he died in a plane crash on December 10, 1967. It was after his death that the song “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay” became a No. 1 hit in 1968.
